As the temperature starts to drop and the air is getting drier by the day, masks are an essential to prepare the skin for the cool season. This post features 3 of my top mask picks. They are listed in no particular order, I equally love them all. I use a combination of these 3 masks on the regular since they all have different purposes and benefits.
TONYMOLY INTENSE CARE SNAIL HYDRO GEL MASK (24k is optional)
Yes, you didn’t read it wrong, it is a SNAIL mask, and to be exact – snail mucin. Tonymoly is one of my favourite Korean brands for masks and don’t get disgusted just yet. Snails are actually packed with a lot of good stuff for the skin. Your first question would be, what is snail mucin?
Snail mucin is essentially snail guts with magical powers for the skin!
- Reduce pigmentation and scarring (fade acne scars)
- Smooth skin
- Clear complexion
- Revitalize the skin
- Promising a super natural glow
How you ask? – “The slime that a snail produces is used to heal its soft, squishy foot when it gets cuts from the rocks, twigs, and other rough surfaces that it moves over–think of it as sort of a built-in pedicure.” [AOL] They were also used in Ancient Greece as an anti-inflammatory. Originally started by Chilean farmers in France while handling escargot, they’ve discovered the wonders it did for their hands and launched the first snail cream under the brand Elicina.
As a country who closely adopts emerging and popular trends, Korea wouldn’t miss jumping on to this band wagon as well.
Many brands carries a “snail” line such as Missha, Faceshop, Skin Food, and the list goes on. My HK recommended this mask to me and highly recommended the hydro gel ones. At first I didn’t understand the difference but after trying it, I don’t blame her. To make it easier. I’ll break down the 3 types for you – paper, cotton, and hydro gel.
Paper – cheapest of the three and can be widely found in drugstores and dollar stores. It provides the lowest amount of absorption and only ensure the mask maintains its moisture for a set time (at least 10-15 mins).
Cotton – better than paper since the moisture lasts longer; which is actually a significant difference for masks (usually 15 – 20 mins).
Hydrogel – composed of almost-like medical grade material that are used for treating burns. It provides the highest amount of absorption and formulates a layer between the skin and environment to protect it; nothing can get in or out. The masks usually can stay moist for up to 40 minutes. I typically use it once for 20 and then seal it for use again the next day for 20.
I use this mask at least once very week since it gives my tiring skin a lift and revitalizes it.
SU:M37 WHITE AWARD DETOX BUBBLE MASK
This is one fascinating mask!
It is called a bubble mask because it goes on like a cream but over time, it foams up giving you a tingling yet refreshing sensation. When the mask is foaming up, it releases oxygen bubbles into your skin creating instant brightening results. This mask is also ideal for cleaning deep pores by drawing out pollutants, soothing and softens the skin.
The packaging of the product is in a 100ml bottle with a built-in push-down pump. Like any mask, use it after washing and drying your face; prior to your skincare routine. I typically would use this at night but since the glowing results are immediate, you can also using it in the morning if you want that extra boost in radiance on your face.
Description on packaging indicates that it can be used 2-3 times per week but depending on your preference, you can decide. Just remember, because of the packaging, make sure you clean the top, firmly close it and keep it stored in a cool place.
Although this mask has the word “white” in the name, it is not whitening! It has brightening capabilities which differ from whitening.
GLAMGLOW YouthMud Tingling & Exfoliating Mud Mask
This is the newest obsession of mine thanks to a close bff who introduced me to it. Now I can’t part ways with it. This mask actually comes at a much higher price point than the 2 above and although in a small packaging.. it lasts pretty long. At first I was scared because its a mud mask so I assumed I needed to apply a lot on my face; so the size to cost originally seemed like a rip off to me. Boy was I wrong!
What is good about this mask is, it only takes 10 mins!
Benefits include providing radiant glowing skin, exfoliating, tightening pores and skin textures, reduce impurities without removing natural oils, and youthful looking skin! There are 3 main ingredients in here that does the work:
– French Sea Clay: Absorbs impurities and toxins without removing essential natural oils yet minimizes pore size
– Volcanic Pumice Rock: Exfoliation to clear dead skin cells, smoothing out fine lines and softening skin texture
– Green Tea Leaf Pieces: anti-oxidant agent for the skin
How to use it? (taken from Sephora)
- Apply a thin layer to clean face (can also be used on the neck and chest).
TIP – Make sure you stir well before applying.
- Remove mask with water in circular motions to exfoliate.
- Use twice a week or as often as desired.
- Seal lid tightly.
- To re-liquefy, add drops purified water and stir.
