Fancy to have you here as I do a quick review of my recent experience at ESCABÈCHE this past weekend. I visited the charming estate of Prince of Wales Hotel where the restaurant was located along with 5 amazing girlfriends of mine to celebrate Judy’s (a long-time trinhology contributer) birthday. I’d love introduce you all to this amazing friend because she is SUPER talented and I can honestly say, Trinhology would not have been the same without her help; but I’ll leave that for a separate post.
Now lets get down to business…
If you are a Torontonian, it is about 120+ km drive southwest via the QEW. This is about 1.5 hours drive from Central Downtown with no traffic. I personally love the location because there are so much you can do before or after the high tea. Niagara-on-the-lake is filled with vineyards, farms, restaurants and beautiful scenary. It also gives you a good reason for a mini road trip for special occasions such as birthdays, bachelorettes, girls day out or just because.
Interior Decor –
I apologize for not taking pictures of it but you can find plenty on their website. Decorated with English influence and a traditional British home feel, there is really nothing to dislike about it. Every table is set with fresh flowers and the most cutest set of China I’ve ever seen. I really need to find myself a set so I can host tea parties. The silverware were a bit tarnished but that gives it character and history. Because of our party size, we were seated inside but they do have patio seating.
Although we made reservations and we arrived 15 minutes earlier, there was a 15-20 minutes wait for them to set up the table. This I did not like because it kind of defeats the purpose of reservations. It took the server a good 5 minutes before she came to our table to give us the menu and quick intro. This wait wasn’t as frustrating as the table set up wait since we were all distracted by the interior decor and table settings. (Who wouldn’t)
The tea and food came out 5-10 minutes after ordering. The best part, they came out all at the same (what bloggers like best to capture that 1 photo). Mind you, the server had to run back and forth from the kitchen a few times. The service wasn’t too bad when we asked for tea refills and the server checked up on us once or twice. I am satisfied with the server service but not happy with the table set up wait. Just be prepared to wait a bit.
The best scones I have ever had! They were as big as an English muffin in size but thicker overall. TIP: eat it when it’s hot and fresh because cooled scones are not half as good
The portions were fairly large for an afternoon. Not sure if it was because we were really hungry to begin with or not, but we finished only 40% of the food! The sandwiches were yummy, I especially enjoyed the cranberry and turkey ham.
Maybe I am not fit for a fancy life – don’t know how to appreciate the pastries nor do I have an appetite for this often. You get full but it’s not a satisfying savoury full.
I sampled 3 teas:
- Peaches & Cream – delicious tasting with very light hint of tea flavour
- Masala Chai – rich in cinnamon and clove flavour
- Himalayan vintage – a black tea for those who prefers a more traditional dark flavour
Expect to spend $34+ not including 13% tax and 15% service charge. High tea here differs from Asia where they charge per head versus per set in the latter. Each person would get 2 pieces of each item and their choice of tea. I suggest that each person try to order different teas so you can sample a greater variety. If you ask me, I prefer how Hong Kong charges it by set. Honestly, 2 pc per person is actually way too filling. I think 3-4 girls can share 1 set and be happily full. This is also more cost-efficient.
You can find more details of the cost breakdown and different kinds of tea in their menu document via here.
